Mark Fisher, in the cap you’ll see on site.
Mark Fisher started The Escarpment Company in 2006, and 2026 is his twentieth season. He has been planting since he was fifteen and still does the work himself. Most days you’ll find him on site setting stone, planting trees or putting the cup in a new putting green.
The company’s motto is conservation through green landscaping. In practice that means planting wherever we can, choosing plants that suit the site, and building things that last.
Disney on a small lot
Mark loves movie sets, and he approaches a backyard the way a set designer would: decide what the space is about, then layer stone, planting, water and light until a standard lot feels like somewhere else. A Japanese garden. A mountain stream. A railway running through the hills.
Why “escarpment”
Milton sits under the Niagara Escarpment, the UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve that runs from Niagara to Tobermory. The hand-drawn line in our logo is a cliff edge with a tree hanging on at the top and a trail winding off along the bottom. Building small pieces of that landscape into backyards is the idea the company was named for.
